"Fluoride Phobia" Takes Hold In Canada

'
Dental News
Fluoride phobia chalked up another victim this week as the City Council of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada promised to stop fluoridating the city’s water supply, something it's had for the past 43 years. The change was a result of a nonbinding public referendum which saw a slim majority of 50.3% of the public voting to end fluoridation.

While the referendum was not binding, the mayor and regional council members had said they would honor the wishes of the majority which could come as soon as November 29, 2010. Two previous referendums on the issue in the 1980s saw Waterloo voters say 'Yes' to fluoridation.

Anti-fluoridation activists cite studies that have linked fluoride to cancer, thyroid disease and improper arthritis diagnoses. However, future head of the Ontario Dental Association, Dr. Harry Hoediono, says that this is due to widespread misconceptions about fluoride, which actually helps to protect teeth and adding fluoride in drinking water has been some commonplace across North America for the past 60 years.

Dental health professionals going to evidence of fluoride being an element that is naturally occurring and having a long history of being and inexpensive way to prevent tooth decay. "We do see first hand the benefits of water fluoridation. Water fluoridation in the right amounts is safe and effective", said Dr. Matt Facica of the Waterloo Wellington Dental Association.

  1. If you want flouride in your water, put it in your own glass of water, leave the rest of us out of it.
If fluoride were "proven," there should be evidence of its glory in Kentucky, which has been 100% fluoridated for over 40 years. Kentucky, however, leads the nation in the number of dental cavities in children, and in the number of completely toothless adults, according to government records. The same ineffectiveness is evident in many states.

Most of Europe (16 countries) has rejected fluoridation and is 98% fluoride free. and the WHO reports that they have a better tooth decay rate than any fluoridated country.
There is no scientific evidence to support the idea that drinking fluoridated water has any effect on cavity reduction — NONE! --- but there is proof that it causes cancer and other health problems. The best source for scientific information on the health hazards and ineffectiveness of fluoridation can be found here: (www.fluoridealert.org).

  2. While I appreciate your thoughtful comments on the subject of fluoridation jwillie6, I feel I must challenge them because, unfortunately, like most anti-fluoridation activists you are openly spreading falsehoods.

To begin with, even if your assertion that Kentucky leads the nation in the number of dental cavities per child is correct, who is to say how many more cavities Kentuckians would have if of their drinking water dating contain fluoride.

Next, the fact that most European countries don't use fluoridation is not due to of them rejecting it like you suggest but rather because in Europe it's common to fluoridate salt instead of water to get the same result but using a different method of delivery according to the British Dental Association.

Finally, your assertion that there is no scientific evidence to support the idea that drinking fluoridated water has any effect on cavity reduction is just plain wrong. The fact of the matter is that such notable organizations as the American Dental Association, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and countless dentist groups --who stand to lose business because of increased dental cavities due to fluoridation-- have all come out in favor of fluoridation due to its public health benefits.

Incidentally, fluoridation is not necessarily the adding of fluoride to municipal drinking water sources but rather the adjusting of the natural amounts of fluoride found in groundwater so that its level is between 0.7 parts per million to 1.2 ppm. Opponents of fluoridation never cite any rigorous, peer-reviewed studies that show that this level of fluoride has any detrimental health effects because there are no such studies because fluoridation is perfectly healthy and quite cost-effective at reducing dental caries in children, especially those who are poor and disadvantaged.
