Electronic Tooth Decay Detector May Be Better Than A Real Dentist

'
Dental News
A new tooth decay detector device may help dentists detect tooth decay earlier than traditional methods.

The device, called CarieScan PRO, was developed by scientists in Scotland and clips onto the mouth and passes a small electrical current through the teeth. Traffic light type colours then turn on to indicate the level of decay, which give health experts a correct status of the problem.

"What I've been able to do is diagnose decay early and make sure it's treated with fluoride varnish rather than putting in a filling", said London-based dentist Dr. Martin Delahaye after using the CarieScan PRO.

"The CarieScan PRO is an interesting innovation, and it's great too, that the concept and design comes from a UK company", said Professor Damien Walmsley, scientific advisor to the British Dental Association. "We look forward to seeing the results of future clinical trials to establish its benefits."

  1. Hi Ken-

What is the accuracy rate of the CariesScan? Is it used like the Diagnodent? The surfaces are dried, it is used on a healthy tooth to calibrate, then used on the area of suspicion?

    Thanks,

    Pam

  3. CariesScan is very much like the much older Diagodent in that it uses laser technology to scan your teeth one by one for decay. The major difference is that -from what I can tell- CariesScan is made by a company in Scotland while Diagodent is made by a company in the US.

  4. Hi Ken:

I will have to see if CariesScan is as accurate as Diagodent, or better.
